With 195 traffic signals, 20,000 streetlights, and a rapidly growing population, Fremont is a classic example of a city requiring smarter solutions for its overall transportation system. The Fremont Boulevard Safe and Smart Corridor project is an initiative to use Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to make the roads safer while providing a more efficient driving experience with improved traffic flow. Our team was a natural partner to work with the City of Fremont on this project, as we have been maintaining traffic systems within the City for over 12 years.
The project included the deployment of an intersection analytics systems on a 9-mile section of Fremont Boulevard. During this project many advanced ITS elements were deployed by our team including traffic signal modernization and re-phasing, Advanced wireless back-haul communication, GPS-based emergency vehicle preemption, real-time transit information and transit signal priority. The traffic corridor is a sensor rich environment allowing it to detect bicycles and pedestrians while using automated speed monitoring and smart parking systems. Additional ITS technologies included V2X communication. dynamic power management of streetlights, and a shared data portal to be used by project stakeholders.
Our team worked collaboratively with many solution providers, equipment manufacturers, and representatives from the City. This high-profile project has served as a national test bed for innovation in traffic safety and touted as one of the most advanced and connected corridors in the U.S.
